This was a full Cotswold stone slate re-roof was completed on the main house, stables, and barn at Old Farm in Swinbrook in the Cotswolds. This comprehensive project took over a year, covered approximately 1,900 m² of stone slate roofing, and combined traditional craftsmanship with modern best practices to renew the estate’s heritage roofing.
Works Carried Out
- Removal: Carefully stripped old Cotswold slates, timber laths, and the existing membrane.
- Underlayment: Laid TLX Gold membrane to bolster waterproofing and improve the property’s EPC rating.
- Batten Installation: Fitted horizontal wooden battens to ensure a level base for slate fixing.
- Slate Cutting & Laying: Precision-cut natural stone slates were nailed and overlapped to form a watertight surface.
- Ridge & Hip Finishing: Applied ridge and hip tiles with a traditional mortar mix for heritage accuracy and extra weather resistance.
- Inspection & Adjustment: Final checks addressed any gaps or loose tiles, guaranteeing a secure, seamless finish.

The Process
Limited on site storage and tight access routes made handling nearly 2,000 m² of heavy stone slates difficult. Coordinating deliveries without disrupting the estate’s daily operations required precise logistical planning.
This project marks our largest Cotswold slate installation to date.
