RAF Benson, Wallingford, Oxfordshire

A large industrial flat roof, re-roofing project due to storm damage at RAF Benson.
Type: Commercial

Client: Ministry of Defence – RAF Benson

Project Overview

This was a commercial/industrial re-roofing for RAF Benson in Oxfordshire. Following severe storm damage in early 2024, the existing flat roof sustained significant damage due to extreme wind conditions sweeping across the airfield. The force of the winds completely stripped away sections of the original roof build-up, leaving the underlying structure exposed and in need of urgent remedial works.

Our team was commissioned to deliver a full flat re-roofing solution that would restore weatherproof integrity and provide long-term resilience against similar high-wind events in the future.

Scope of Works

  • Assessment & Preparation: Conducted a full roof condition survey to identify structural damage and areas requiring repair prior to installation.
  • Removal: Safely removed all remaining debris and damaged roof materials left by the storm to expose a clean, sound substrate.
  • Installation: Installed 1,200 m² of high-performance single-ply membrane roofing, chosen for its exceptional durability, flexibility, and tested resistance to uplift in high wind zones.
  • Finishing: Ensured all perimeter details, joints, and penetrations were fully sealed and weather-tight to RAF specifications.

Challenges

  • Working on an active RAF airfield required strict adherence to security protocols and coordination with base operations to minimise disruption. (Fortunately, due to our other work on RAF bases, this is something we are experienced with)
  • We knew the new flat roof needed to be highly wind-resistant, due to the flat nature of the airfield that had led to the previous damage.

Solutions & Results

The selected single-ply system was mechanically fixed and independently tested to exceed the wind uplift requirements for the airfield’s location. The completed installation provides a robust, low-maintenance, and energy-efficient roofing solution designed to perform under the demanding weather conditions typical of RAF Benson.

Key Features

  • 1,200 m² single-ply roofing system
  • Fully wind-tested and approved installation
  • Rapid project delivery to restore operational functionality
  • Full compliance with MOD and RAF safety standards
