Examples of Our Commercial Roofing Work
Old Farm, Swinbrook
Large-Scale Heritage Re-Roofing with Cotswold Stone Slate
At Old Farm in Swinbrook, we completed a large-scale heritage re-roofing project across the main house, stables, and barn. Covering nearly 1,900 m², this was our largest Cotswold stone slate installation to date.
Ridges and hips were set with traditional lime mortar for heritage accuracy and extra weather resistance, while discreet modern upgrades, including TLX Gold membrane and lead flashing, provided improved waterproofing and energy efficiency.
The result is a seamless renewal that preserves the estate’s historic character while delivering long-lasting performance.
The Old Rectory
Heritage Re-Roofing with Reclaimed Stone Slate
At the Old Rectory in Cirencester, we carried out a specialist heritage re-roofing project using natural Cotswold stone slates to meet conservation guidelines. To preserve the property’s historic character, every slate was carefully squared, remeasured, and installed in traditional diminishing courses. The ridges were finished with lime mortar in keeping with heritage roofing practices, and conservation rooflights were added to increase natural light while maintaining the building’s authenticity.
Bibury Court
Commercial Heritage Roofing with Reclaimed Slate
Our team completed a heritage roofing project at Bibury Court in Bibury using a combination of reclaimed stone slates and professional lead flashing. Stone slates were hand-selected and installed on the pitched elevations to complement the surrounding architecture and comply with conservation requirements, and leadwork was completed

FAQs about Heritage Roofing
Heritage roofing involves working on older properties, often of historical significance or listed buildings, and requires using traditional roofing techniques and materials.
Heritage roofing isn’t just about repairing old roofs or replacing an old building’s roof with a new modern roofing system: It’s about preserving historic buildings, while ensuring they continue to function properly for years to come.
If the building that requires a new roof is a listed building, you will need Listed Building Consent to alter the roof’s shape, height, pitch, or material covering.
At Empire Roofing, we ensure any heritage roofing repairs or larger works match the existing traditional aesthetic of the property. Our team is experienced at working with replacement or reproduction slates like Bradstone and Cardinal, which are approved by West Oxfordshire District Council and surrounding councils.
You do not need consent for repairs to listing buildings as long as the repairs don’t affect the character of the historic building. Thai includes regular maintenance, or repairs in which you use identical materials or methods.
However, you do need consent if the repairs involve altering the building's character, like replacing features such as windows or doors or using newer materials or methods to complete repairs.
